Your problem

You need to detect objects that should bleed but don't in your PDF documents. And if possible, you want to be able to fix the problem. Download 'Detectandfixbleed.pdf' for an example file that illustrates the problem.

Our solution

PitStop Professional 08 is able to detect the bleed setting of any object close to the page edge and automatically expand any rectangular element to meet the required bleed setting.

 1. Using the PDF Profile

The easiest way to do this is editing an existing PDF Profile or creating a new PDf Profile to check the bleed settings.

We open the PDF Profile panel through Plug-ins > Enfocus PitStop Professional > Show Enfocus PDF Profile panel.

How to configure the PDF Profile?

  • Select an existing PDF Profile or create a new one through Manage > New.

  • In the PDF Profile editor look for the category 'Page Settings'.

  • Enable this category and the second check in this category.

  • There are 2 options that define what options should be checked:

    1. The first part allows you to check for objects, which are situated inside, but very close to the trim box. Set a margin here of "0.2mm"

    2. The second part allows you to check the bleed settings of objects that already have bleed. Leave this to "0" but select the bleed box as a reference.

  • Finally enable the automatic correction to fix the bleed settings on any rectangular element within the document.

  • Acknowledge this PDF Profile configuration by clicking OK.

The opened document has some objects that don't have the required bleed settings. We find a nice example zooming in to the yellow rectangle.

When we execute the PDF Profile on the current document the Navigator shows us that these objects are automatically corrected.

When zooming in on the yellow rectangle once more we see the result of the correction.

 2. Using an Action List

You can use an Action List as well to check and/or fix the object bleed settings.

The actions related to bleed settings are:

  • Select objects close to the page edge

  • Change objects that are close to the page edge

  • Check if object is close to the page edge

The configuration is similar to the PDF Profile check.

Example = Check bleed settings on the first page only

  • Select first page

  • Check if object is close to the page edge

Download this action list here.

To allow easy access, you can assign the Action List to a QuickRun button so that running it on the open document requires only one click.

Automation

When you create an Action List to solve this problem, you can use that Action List in PitStop Server so that all PDF documents dropped in a watched folder are automatically picked up and fixed.
