A product of:

The Tharstern MIS is a powerful and comprehensive MIS that supports the major disciplines of print including litho, digital, packaging, wide format and label printing, all within one solution.

With its powerful estimating tool and purpose built CRM, the Tharstern MIS helps printing companies to speed up the estimating process, improve customer experience and stand out from the crowd.

Use cases

The Tharstern team are experts in workflow integration and have a team of specialists to help their customers integrate their hardware and software into one automated workflow.  The software also has an API which has been built to be friendly to other software providers and developers.  By making it possible for other applications to share data with Tharstern and to take actions on its behalf (and vice versa), a Tharstern customer knows that however their business develops in the future, their MIS can grow with them.

Remote approvals from Tharstern

What

By using Switch and Tharstern together, our users can manage the approval process without leaving Tharstern and our MIS will record the approval milestones. Once approved, files are automatically sent to the press via JDF.

Why

We love the Switch PDF Review Module because it makes the remote approval process incredibly smooth and eliminates the need for java plugins, login details, registrations and forgotten passwords.  Embedding Switch’s approval process into our MIS means our users can streamline the approval process and deliver a great experience for their own customers.

How

Tharstern triggers the approval process in Switch which sends the approval link to the contact defined by Tharstern. Switch updates the MIS with each approval milestone e.g. ‘artwork approved’, ‘artwork rejected’ or ‘new approval link sent’, along with a link to any annotated PDFs. This allows our users to keep a record of all their proofing cycles for each job, from their creation to their submission to digital device/plates.  This has proven very useful for when a customer comments on a late delivery that is actually due to their own delays in approving proofs, and also as a means to analyze the amount of time spent on proofing cycles.

HP EPM Preflight with Tharstern

What

When jobs are sent to press from Tharstern MIS, Switch automatically tests them for suitability for HP’s EPM mode, removing the need for manual checks.

Why

EPM is a mode on the Indigo 7000 and above series where you can print black using Cyan, Yellow and Magenta.  Not only does this increase production speed, but it also reduces the number of click charges. It isn’t suitable for all jobs or even every customer and each job has to be checked for suitability.  Doing this manually erodes any cost savings that could be achieved. But by using Switch and Tharstern together, our users can automate this process to run in the background.

How

Switch automatically preflights print-ready PDF files, analyzing them for criteria such as: use of spot colors, number of black pages, ink coverage and font size and then routes them to either an EPM or a non-EPM specific workflow, based on this analysis.

Preflighting PDFs from Tharstern MIS

What

Using Enfocus Switch and Tharstern together presents users with additional preflighting opportunities not normally available through their prepress software. Users can compare artwork files with the original estimate to check that the page size and number of pages match.

Why

This allows users to identify and fix artwork problems before jobs move to the prepress stage, increasing the speed by which these jobs are processed and/or presenting them with the chance to recover any costs incurred by fixing incorrect artwork.

How

Estimating or CSR teams will be alerted to any jobs with artwork that does not match the estimate created in the MIS.  Users can then view the incorrect artwork and either correct it using Switch, or send it back to the customer with a request for new artwork.

The biggest benefit of using Switch with a Tharstern MIS is a time-saving one - files that pass the quality control steps are moved directly to production, so the operator does not need to spend any time checking them.  Decisions can also be automated by creating rules e.g. if a 4PP document is only 3 pages and the second page is twice as wide as the other two, then auto-select the ‘split’ option (converts a spread to single pages).

Tharstern order processing

What

Tharstern MIS users can use Switch to process multiple data files from different storefronts and auto-process them ready for production.

Why

This solution is perfect for high volume, low value print jobs where any manual intervention destroys the margins and so automation is the key to profitability.

How

Incoming orders are processed by Switch which converts the XML to cXML so that the Tharstern MIS can process the file as an order. Switch then submits the job to the DFE.
